Divorced at 26 and shot
at the young age of 29 and raising two small children while in a wheelchair
could not have been easy. I know she had a hard life and I know I didn’t make
it any easier on her but she did a damn good job all in all and she managed to
live long enough to see us raised and to see her grandchildren.
Although she very seldom
left her home, she was well loved by the kids in the neighborhood. When my
brothers kids were growing up in the same house, the kids in the neighborhood
got to calling her “Mamo”. A name R.D., my nephew called her since he was
really little.
When I was a young girl
I remember many times in the Spring, kids would bring her baby birds that fell
from the nest and she would hand feed them…some even lived and became family
pets.
Here is a link to a pdf
of the
newspaper article written on what happened to my mother in 1962. This
incident affected me and my brother very profoundly. For me, I was always very
intensely proud of how my mother showed her strength living with the limitations
of her life.
I love you mama…rest in
peace…finally
